What are the Midlands Made: Screendance films

As part of Birmingham International Dance Festival Online 2021, DanceXchange commissioned a series of new screendance films in support of the creative practice of artists working in the Midlands. With the support of experienced screendance production company, The Motion Dance Collective, the artists were supported to turn their vision into reality. The films were livestreamed in our Midlands Made programme, and premiered in June 2021.

Who are The Motion Dance Collective?

Award-winning Screendance production company, The Motion Dance Collective (The MDC), was founded in 2011 by director and choreographer, Omari ‘Motion’ Carter. The MDC has gained worldwide recognition as a production company that produces thought-provoking work combining dance and moving image, using the hybrid practice that is screendance to tell relevant stories with dance and the screen.

On behalf of myself and The Motion Dance Collective, it was a pleasure to be a part of BIDF and to work in tandem with DanceXchange! The works, the crafts, the minds and the bodies showcased have extreme value, and to be able to facilitate the digitisation of many idiosyncratic dance-film makers has been an experience that we will carry with us for a very long time. All of this work is both needed and underrepresented and DanceXchange have changed the game by showing up and representing! Let’s continue to fuel the fire!
