We invite interest from independent artists/collectives (excluding NPOs) based in the Midlands and working in dance, movement and choreography; seeking in-kind studio space for the development of their creative practice.

FABRIC in Birmingham and Nottingham

Space availability*

Weekdays (Monday to Friday, 10am till 5pm)

January till July or September till December (closed for Christmas).

Space allocation

5 days is the maximum number of days per individual residency. This does not need to be 5 consecutive days; however, artists are expected to use the space for the whole day (10am till 5pm) 

Activity supported

Research and development – space for independent dance artists and the development of their creative practice. 

Application deadline

Request for In-Kind Space have no specific deadline. We allocated 8 to 10 weeks free space per year, averaging 2 to 3 weeks per quarter across each of our sites in Birmingham and Nottingham.

You can request space for up to 9 months in advance, however we advise that you apply for space with at least 3 months advance notice.

Space requested is subject to availability and eligibility.

Your commitment

If you are offered an In-Kind residency as part of your commitment, once dates are booked in they cannot be altered.

In the case that you do not turn up, or you cancel last minute, you will be subject to a cancellation fee and will not able to request a space again until this is resolved.

Selection Criteria

  • Your activity must resonate with FABRIC’s Curatorial Statement
  • You are an independent artist working in dance, movement or choreography (not a National Portfolio Organisation)
  • You are based in (and currently living in) the Midlands 
  • You are aged 18 or over
  • You are not a full-time (undergraduate / Masters) student 
  • You are not currently in negotiation with FABRIC about another residency or artist support (this excludes 4Squares and Blank Space) 
  • The activity you are proposing is self-funded, or is funded through other resources/funding* 
  • Your activity will use our standard studio set-up. Details of our standard studio set up can be found here.

*No studio space can be held until any required funding is secured.

Selection Process

Requests for Studio Space In-Kind will be reviewedon a rolling basis and assessed on their alignment with the criteria above and FABRIC’s Curatorial Statement and priorities.

It is expected that we will support 2 to 3 artists/collectives each quarter.  

We have a total of 40 to 50 days available annually for this activity.
