Movement-based artist Jane Mason invites people to explore their experiences, sense of place and belonging through movement. Particularly those who have or are experiencing moments of change or transition in their life.

Jane is no stranger to the City and the people of Nottingham, having worked on projects such as Street Dance, and A Dance at Home commissioned by Dance4.  

This September, we’re delighted to welcome Jane back to Nottingham to begin a creative process, meeting people, moving together, and unveiling people’s stories of place, periods of change and experiences of loss or growth.  

Your Invitation from Jane:  

Having had the privilege of working with people of Nottingham on previous projects, it means a great deal to me to reconnect with the rebellious spirit that runs through this city and the people who call it home.   

As a movement-based artist, I’m struck by the ways movement can expand our awareness of ourselves, each other, and the places we inhabit, in profound ways.   

My practice is rooted in choreography, as a way of thinking and being in the world. I’m interested in creative ways of seeing, sensing, and relating to one another, using movement to shape and frame our experiences.  

At the heart of this project are moments of change: times when something in our lives is shifting. Maybe you’re experiencing periods of uncertainty, transition, adjustment; moments of loss or growth. 

In my mid-fifties I’m interested in meeting people who find themselves at such a point; grappling with questions (more than answers), who may feel curious about what an embodied process of moving together might reveal.   

How does our sense of home live in our bodies over time?   

How might movement help to reveal buried connections between place, memory and our evolving sense of who we are?
