Residency: GOD’S OWN

GOD’S OWN is the next ensemble work by choreographer Botis Seva and Far From The Norm. The project explores how Christian symbolism and biblical values resonate within lived experiences today. Rather than approaching faith as fixed doctrine, the research considers belief as something actively embodied, questioned and negotiated in everyday life.

At the centre of the work is a tension: why, in moments of suffering, injustice and moral rupture, does humanity continue to turn towards – or struggle with – the idea of God? The research investigates themes including grace, forgiveness, obedience, rebellion and love, examining how these values are resisted or reclaimed in contemporary society.

This residency will support a research-led phase focused on exploring thematic questions and physical responses to research a new language and impetus for GOD’S OWN.

About Botis Seva

Botis Seva is a distinctive choreographic voice rooted in hip-hop dance theatre, known for a freeform and innovative approach to choreography. His work draws on autobiographical experiences and personal stories, while borrowing techniques from film, text, visual art and diverse dance languages to continually reinvent his creative process and stage practice.

Beginning as a beat-maker and MC at his local youth club, Seva discovered dance at 15 and quickly dedicated himself to the form. At 19 he founded the hip-hop theatre company Far From The Norm in a youth club in Dagenham, creating a collective driven by creative risk, authenticity and experimentation between hip-hop and contemporary practices.

Early mentorship through Breakin’ Convention at Sadler’s Wells helped him refine his craft and develop his voice. His breakthrough work BLKDOG won the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production in 2019.

Far From The Norm’s repertoire spans live theatre productions, outdoor performances, immersive experiences, and film. The company tours both nationally and internationally, creating strong global partnerships that support and inspirethe next generation of hip-hop dance theatre artists.
