Remote Residency

Aimed at artists who are beginning to develop their choreographic practice, the Remote Residency presents an opportunity to carve out time to think, research and test ideas from their own homes.

Artists benefitted from mentoring with renowned artist Joseph Toonga (Artistic Director of Just Us Dance Theatre) and the dx Artist Support team, with the freedom to develop a choreographic idea without the pressure of producing a finished piece.

The dx Remote Residency supported up to three artists for a period of one week, with activity taking place before 31 January 2021.

Jessica Campbell

Based in Birmingham, Jessica trained as an elite gymnast and synchronised swimmer from a young age, trialling for the GB Olympic Squad for London 2012. Following training with Reflex Youth Dance and DanceXchange from age 13, Jessica graduated from University of Roehampton in 2014 with first-class honours in Dance Studies before completing The Dancers Course with BalletBoyz in 2015. Since then, Jessica has travelled across Europe and India as a performance artist spanning dance, aerial work, synchronised swimming and hoop.

What will you be working on as part of your Remote Residency?

I’ll be revisiting one of my early pieces ‘SYNCHRONISED’, which combines my skills and knowledge within synchronised swimming and dance. I hope to interrogate the quality of movement across both practices and refine my choreographic language.

Niquelle LaTouche

Based in London, Niquelle LaTouche is a British-born and Caribbean (Dominica) raised artist (Poet/Choreographer & Fine Art) and educator who is invested in speaking from a place of authenticity to encourage creative collaboration and togetherness. She is the founder of Niquelle LaTouche Arts (est. 2014) and It Takes A Village Collective (est. 2020) which both act as spaces to facilitate proactive social change.

What will you be working on as part of your Remote Residency?

I will be developing my piece ‘M(other)land’. M(other)land is a dance theatre piece created in 2017 which fuses poetry, fine art and African, Dancehall and UK Grime movement whilst celebrating the relationship between the nuances of the individual cultures. The piece stresses the importance of “art as a universal language” and navigates a seemingly simple question “where are you from?”

Sana El-Wakili

An actor, dancer, choreographer, circus artists, poet, writer…to put into one term – an artist! Born and bred in London from immigrant North African parents, Sana is interested in telling stories and using art to share societal truths. Her training spans organisations including Young & Talented, Roundhouse London and East London Dance, and she is currently Young Leader with the Peabody Trust London.

What will you be working on as part of your Remote Residency?

I will be responding to ‘the now’, using themes of loneliness, solitude and uncertainty as a starting point. I’m interested in the connection between fixed choreography and improvisation, the relationship between movement and music, the fusion of artistic practices and the impact that space has on choreographic language.
