In this Contemporary Beginners class you’ll be introduced and will learn technical foundation and mechanics of various contemporary dance techniques.

With a dynamic playlist and emphasis on self-expression, this class is ideal for beginners and those new to contemporary dance.

The tutors for this class are:

9, 16, 23, 30 Sept and 7 Oct : Shaq Shadare

Shaq Shadare’s class will be focused on providing a fun and light-hearted learning space, using phrase work and exercises, to learn contemporary technique and get comfortable on the ground. The aim for newcomers and beginners to contemporary dance to have a session full of exploration and self expression.

28 Oct, 4, 11, 18, 25 Nov and 2 Dec: Dan Lukehurst

Through set exercises, lead explorations and choreographed phrase work, with Dan you’ll explore your movement and condition your body in a light-hearted and relaxed learning environment.

14 and 21 Oct: Angharad Jones-Young

Angharad’s sessions will draw from a range of different contemporary styles – improvisation, floor work, as well as standing sequences and phrases. Throughout the classes there will be a focus on movement flow and use of breath. The main aim of Angharad’s sessions is to have fun and dance together – expect upbeat music, positive energy and dynamic movement phrases. Great for those wanting to try or learn something new.

Booking in advance is recommended

Online booking: Booking online in advance is recommended and it will close 15 minutes after the class start time. Please ensure all personal information is entered correctly when booking your class.

In-person: Tickets can also be brought on the day at reception, contactless payment is preferred and you should be aware if looking to pay on the door, tickets may have been already sold out.

Refunds, Exchanges and Transfers: Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged, refunded or transferred unless the class/event is cancelled by us.

Birmingham Class FAQs

All studios are located within the Birmingham Hippodrome. Please come to Level 5 Reception where we will indicate where your class will take place.

To access Level 5 please enter via the Birmingham Hippodrome Thorp Street Entrance Door (this is the entrance before the Stage Door).

You may need to check in with staff at the reception desk in the foyer.

The lift to Level 5 is on the right in the foyer or you can take the metal stairs immediately in front of the entrance.

Please ensure you are on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late you won’t be able to access the studio.

For all classes, please register at the FABRIC reception desk on Level 5 via the Birmingham Hippodrome Thorp Street entrance. You will then be directed to your correct studio and changing rooms and toilets.

Concessions are available to those who are:

No. Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged, refunded or transferred unless the class/event is cancelled by us.

Discounts are applied to one qualifying transaction. Discounts are shown in your basket as shared across each class in your booking.

Anything comfortable that lets you move freely. You can wear tracksuit bottoms, leggings & t-shirts for most classes.
Please wear light-soled trainers or dance shoes (if you have them), black-soled trainers and stiletto heels are not allowed.
Bare feet or socks can be worn for contemporary and yoga classes.

Yes, there are changing rooms and shower facilities. There is also a disabled toilet and adapted shower available.

We don’t have lockers so please take all your valuable possessions with you into the studio from the changing rooms.
Yes, please bring your refillable water bottle with you. You can take bottles with you into the studios.
You won’t be allowed to join a class if you’re more than 15 minutes late. This is because you’ll have missed the warm-up, which increases your chance of injury.

We aim to make our classes accessible to everyone regardless of disability. Our facilities include:

  • Lift access is available, with alternatives available in the event of any technical fault.
  • Disabled toilet and adapted shower facility.
  • Wheelchair accessible studio
  • Free access for carer/support worker
