Ascension Dance (Ashley Jordan)

Residency: Amaris

An exploration into the creation of a new work titled Amaris, aimed at children and young people aged 3 – 7 about the exploration of movement and the creative canvas of darkness.

Ascension Dance, founded in 2017 by Ashley Jordan (AJ) and Ben Morley, has, for the last 7 years been using movement to inspire creative thinking and empowering people to find self-confidence via the medium of dance and movement. Rooted in contemporary dance but with a keen interested in pulling movement vocabulary from Parkour and partnering work, Ascension have toured works across the UK and Europe with works, Early Weaves and The Other Side.

This residency would be a new exploration into create a work that comes from a place of play and exploration into both navigating sets and light. With a deep curiosity about inspiring creativity in young people, Ashley is intrigued by how yong audience members can become curious participants, pulling ideas from what they have seen and adding that to their own innate interests, both sensory and physically.

This residency will explore the unpicking of the traditional concepts of performance and start the process of how to can create a work that inspires, intrigues and invites young people to open their eyes to new inventive movement and play possibilities.

Ashley Jordan – Company Director and Choreographer for Ascension Dance

Rooted in feelings and centred around our human connection to others, Ashley uses, relationships and a powerful movement vocabulary to create choreographic pieces that aim to stretch our perception of who we are and what motivates us as people. This work will physically challenge the concept of play for young people embodying ideas of Ashley’s love invention and creative outlets.

“Ascension Dance produces work that unifies contemporary dance and a raw physicality to create visceral and striking visual illustrations. With a keen focus on human interactions and relationships, Ascension Dance pushes the boundaries of communication through high velocity physical encounters, which soar, slide and crash in the pursuit of unravelling what it means to connect with the places and humans around us.”
