Critical Mass was an inclusive dance project that engaged 242 young people (aged 16-30) in 600+ classes, rehearsals and performances over a 14-month period in the lead-up to the Games, which aimed to redefine genuine inclusion in mega-events.
With 45% of participants identifying as disabled, neurodivergent or living with a long-term health condition, the project explored new approaches to inclusion at a major cultural event.
Created through a partnership between Birmingham 2022 Festival, Fabric, Arts Connect and the Dance Development Leaders Group, Critical Mass generated valuable learning around the design and delivery of large-scale inclusive dance projects.
The Critical Mass Playbook captures this learning, sharing reflections, practical guidance and key considerations for anyone developing an inclusive project of this nature. Covering project design, set-up, delivery and close-down, it offers insights, lessons learned and tools to support future large-scale participatory work.

For others to take a different approach with the same bold principles, to challenge what they already do with the smallest adjustment, or just to be inspired by the possibilities that come from being audacious about inclusion.’
