WASTELAND comes to Nottingham Playhouse on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October

WASTELAND is co-commissioned by Dance4.

In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. Created to mark the 25th anniversary since the demolition and 30 years since the rise of UK rave culture, WASTELAND is the highly anticipated new dance theatre show from acclaimed British choreographer Gary Clarke and the sequel to his multi award winning production COAL.

This thrilling yet deeply touching production takes a close look at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. A fractured relationship between a father and son is at the heart of the story, and as we see one generation grind exhaustedly to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance.

Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of male singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundscore and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

WASTELAND Workshop
To support the national tour of Gary Clarke‘s highly anticipated new dance theatre show WASTELAND, Dance4 and Gary Clarke Company invite young people aged between 14-19 to take part in a movement and creative dance workshop exploring themes from the show. The Workshop is led by professional dancer Rob Anderson from the touring Company. Participants will have the opportunity to learn repertoire from the show, create work using physical exploration and have an insight into Gary Clarke’s choreography.

WASTELAND explores the decline of the British coal mining industry and the birth of rave sub-culture in the UK. It brings together Clarke’s blistering physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of male singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave sound score and unique artwork by Jimmy Cauty (Co-founder of The KLF), Wasteland dives headfirst into a hedonistic story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

As part of the workshop ticket price, participants will also receive a ticket to see WASTELAND at Nottingham Playhouse on Friday 25 or Saturday 26 October, with an offer available for an additional ticket.
