A fresh voice in British dance choreographer Joe Moran (semi-finalist Place Prize 2012) brings five distinctive new dance works to Lakeside’s Djanogly Gallery 2 and theatre this summer.

Beginning in the gallery, Singular is a durational performance installation problematising its performers’ subjectivities through conceptual and perceptual puzzles. In counterpoint, the film of The Modulated Body, commissioned by Ordovas for Movement and Gravity: Bacon and Rodin in dialogue, is a new dance work that responds to the interplay and elegance and violence in the work of Francis Bacon and Auguste Rodin.

In the theatre Obverse, commissioned for The Place Prize for dance sponsored by Bloomberg, is a powerful trio danced to a striking score in which dancer’s physical and perceptual virtuosity is tested from one moment to the next.

Survey is a compelling live solo for dancer Marina Collard that questions abstraction in dance in face of the physical, human presence of the dancer. The Swarm Duet plays on the edges of chance to liberate the poetry and immediacy of dance.

The result is a complex and charged choreographed evening that leads its audience across spaces and across forms.

‘Moran’s interpretation explodes with the energy and insouciance of youth’ THE GLOBE AND MAIL (Canada).
