That! Dance at Æthelstan performance with Motionhouse

From 20-28 July, Tamworth is hosting a historic week-long festival delivered by Tamworth Castle and St Editha’s Church, to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the ascension of Æthelstan, King of Mercia, who is considered by many historians as the first King of England. The week will include Anglo-Saxon living history, community archaeology, talks and lectures, demonstrations, community art and live music.

Forging the King: Æthelstan, first King of England

In a dramatic opening to Æthelstan1100, Forging the King follows Æthelstan on his journey to become what many historians believe to be the first King of England. Created by internationally renowned dance-circus company Motionhouse and featuring a cast of young people from the local community, this open-air dance-circus spectacle will take place against the powerful backdrop of Tamworth Castle.

Forging the King tells the story of Æthelstan’s arrival in Tamworth and how the guidance from Mercian warrior Queen Æthelflæda shaped him into a great King.

Audiences can watch the story of Forging a King unfold at 11am and 2pm on Saturday 20 July in Tamworth Castle grounds. Suitable for all ages. For more info go to
