FREE(HOLD) by n:u. Photography by Devika Billimoria
FREE(HOLD) is the World Premiere of a devotional live artwork at the junction of dance, performance, and ritual. The performance is dedicated to the practice of trying again, and again.
n:u (melissandre varin) gathers artists Ãssia Ghendir, Kelvin Atmadibrata, Sel Kofiga and Echo Morgan, unearthing tensions faced by those settling in the belly of the colonial beast.
Guided by spiritual, material and human encounters, the artists engage with ideas of land ownership, liberation, and the inherited, moving intimately with the ghosts of Empire. FREE(HOLD) reflects on the ways systems of dominance, sick capitalism and accumulation condition and pre-determine our (im)possible relationships to place, land, and belonging.
Fierce says:
Following an appearance at Tate Britain and a milestone exhibition at Eastside Projects, n:u returns to Fierce with a full-length work. n:u’s performance practice has a distinctive, unmistakable electricity that bounces between body, space, and object. For this Fierce commission, they add four performers to the mix, intensifying these physical, emotional, and psychic sensations and bringing us along for the ride.
This performance is presented in Fierce Festival as part of THIS IS DANCE
THIS IS DANCE is an international season of dance in Birmingham presented in partnership with Fabric, Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham Rep, Fierce Festival, Midlands Arts Centre and Sampad Arts, bringing exceptional dance from both across the globe and the local community.
