Derby Festé: MAM by Jen Malarkey

In the east-end edge-lands of 1992, a pregnant woman confronts the reality of becoming a mother. Years later, a son comes to terms with the family he belongs to.

This hard hitting dance work-in-progress is a study of ordinary lives, extraordinary love, the gold, the rubbish and the inevitable that we pass down through the generations.

MAM dismantles the ideology of the “perfect” mother and “devoted” son, weaving ordinary lives with myth to explore the tension between desire and obligation.

Originally seed supported by Company Chameleon through the UPLIFT dance artist in residency programme in Manchester and developed with Fabric, for outdoor settings, MAM is a metamorphic solo exploring the complexities of motherhood and offers a choreographic language of both reckoning and hope.
