CROWD – international dance exchange was a collaborative network of dance organisations that supported dance makers whose practice centred on working with communities.
Through residencies, shared learning and opportunities for discussion and knowledge exchange, the project enabled artists with an established community-engaged practice to expand their professional networks, exchange ideas with peers across international contexts, and further develop their artistic practice

history
CROWD – international dance exchange was initiated by the Goethe-Institut in 2021 to forge connections between some of the leading dance institutions across Europe. The intention was to explore and share practice within community-engaged dance and provide a platform for exchange and development for dance artists. Funded by the Goethe-Institut, Arts Council England, NRW KULTURsekretariat, Nordisk Kulturfond and Creative Scotland.
Since the first residency programme in 2021 which supported 6 artists, CROWD has grown to include more partners and artists, allowing the network to widen our reach and raise our ambition to explore, develop and share community-engaged dance.

CROWD international dance exchange programme continued for its second year in summer 2022.
At Space 2, we hosted London-based artist Elsabet Yonas in a residency exchange with Maya Dalinsky and Bora Bora residency centre in Aarhus, Denmark.
Taking place across Finland, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK between Monday 11 July and Friday 23 September, 10 artists to explored and developed their practice in community-engaged dance by working with and learning from each other and local participants.
The ten artists worked in pairs and come together twice for a two-week residency. They also took part in an online programme of professional development opportunities and discursive sessions exploring community engagement in dance.

In CROWD’s first year, we hosted six selected artists in residence.
UK based artists Emma Lewis-Jones and Victor Fung worked alongside international artists Pontus Linder (FI), Hannah Sampé (DE), Agnetha Jaunich (DE) and Jija Sohn (NL).
There was also a 2-day summit welcoming project partners to Space 2 to continue exploring crossover themes, hear from experts, and develop a shared understanding of the practice of community engagement in dance.
