Bodies in Flight were in residence at iC4C periodically between January and June 2019 working on their work Life Class.
Bodies In Flight created performance work that explored the encounter between flesh and text, where words moved and flesh uttered, making the ordinary central and rendering it unique.
The company was fascinated by the spaces in between: between body and mind, capability and desire, the everyday and the extraordinary, technologies of sound and vision, the tongue and the camera, and artistry and pedagogy. Their work was often described as both cutting-edge and accessible, attracting a wide cross-section of audiences.
During the residency, Bodies In Flight developed Life Class, a performance celebrating our greatest, most memorable and most requested role – ourselves.
Through poetic text, music and intricate choreography, Life Class asked: how did we end up playing this part, in this scene, with these lines? It also wondered: who’s this dancing opposite? How do the people we share our lives with determine who we are and make us, us?
Drawing on collaborations with tea dancers and a male voice choir, Life Class was presented alongside the Flesh and Text exhibition, celebrating 30 years of the company’s ground-breaking work.
Bodies In Flight presented Life Class on Friday 21 June at the Djanogly Theatre.
