Fabric was created in 2022 when DanceXchange in Birmingham and Dance4 in Nottingham came together through a formal merger, with a shared vision for the future of dance in the Midlands.
By joining hands, we combined decades of experience, expertise and networks to build a stronger and more sustainable future for the artform. Our collective knowledge and resources enable us to expand opportunities for more people to make, take part in and experience dance.
From the beginning, we knew that Fabric would be more than a merger of two organisations. While we are proud of the legacies of DanceXchange and Dance4, we were, and are, inspired by the opportunity to have something new. Rather than simply adopting programmes and ways of working of our predecessor organisations, we began designing and implementing our approach for the world as it is now, responding to the needs of today.
Our belief in the power of dance continues to shape everything we do. We see dance as a force for creativity, connection, learning, and transformation, with the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people and the places they call home. Working collaboratively with artists, participants, audiences and partners, we co-create the conditions for dance to flourish and make programmes that reflect the diversity and creativity of the Midlands.
Today, Fabric carries forward the legacy of its founding organisations while looking to the future. We’re here to unlock new possibilities for dance across the Midlands together – connecting our place to the world through the global communities that shape our work.
